Phi Mu Alpha National Convention - Day 1 (July 15, 2009)

Things have been kind of crazy since getting to Orlando. It is ridiculously hot and humid here. My first trip to Florida will definitely not be forgotten. There has been a lot of time spent finding my way around Orlando with my Rho Tau brothers and much more time meeting new brothers from all over the country. People are pouring in as the convention is preparing to officially begin at 7:45. There will be hundreds upon hundreds of proud Sinfonians from all walks of life who are bound together this week with an incredible fraternal spirit.

The rehearsal for the Sinfonia Winds went fairly well. It's always surprising to see how 50-60 musicians from completely different walks of life interact and respond to each other musically. Dr. Bobby Adam from Stetson University can definitely be a character in and out of rehearsal and he expects nothing but the best from his ensemble. The concert on Saturday afternoon/evening should definitely be one to remember.

This week is already shaping up to be such a different experience from anything I've ever had before with the Fraternity. To be able to interact with so many people who share a common bond is truly incredible; as is the ability to meet Dr. Frank Ticheli and to see him become a part of this incredible journey called Sinfonia.

An amusing anecdote: I met a man who noticed my fraternity letters on my shirt and introduced himself to me as a Sinfonian. He had seen a few other brothers walking around and he asked me what we were doing here. I thought he was joking but I decided to humor him and I told him it was the 2009 National Convention. He was incredibly shocked and he said he had no idea it was going on this week. He was simply here on vacation with his wife. Incredible!

Best wishes to all my brothers back home. In Sinfonia,

Wess
